Mumbai’s suburban railway network is set for a major upgrade, with the Ministry of Railways approving projects worth ₹52,724 crore under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP). These transformative initiatives aim to ease congestion, enhance capacity, and improve daily travel for millions of commuters.
Investment Breakdown:
MUTP-II: ₹8,087 crore, MUTP-III: ₹10,947 crore, MUTP-IIIA: ₹33,690 crore
Major Projects Underway:
Under MUTP-III, several key corridors are being developed:
Panvel–Karjat line development, Quadrupling of the Virar–Dahanu section, Construction of the Airoli–Kalwa Elevated Corridor, Implementation of trespass control measures, Procurement of 238 new 12-car EMU rakes, representing a ₹19,293 crore investment in modern rolling stock
These efforts are complemented by ongoing projects such as:
5th and 6th lines between Borivali–Virar, 3rd and 4th lines between Kalyan–Badlapur
All projects are being executed by Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation Ltd (MRVC Ltd), a 50:50 joint venture between the Ministry of Railways and the Government of Maharashtra.
Capacity Expansion on Key Corridors:
Churchgate–Virar section:, 4 lines: Churchgate–Mumbai Central, 8 lines: Mumbai Central–Borivali, 6 lines: Borivali–Virar
CSMT–Panvel section:
5th and 6th lines sanctioned between CSMT–Kurla, Work underway between Kurla–Parel, Additional lines operational on CSMT–Kurla–Vasai–Panvel route
Intermodal Connectivity:
To improve commuter convenience, the Railways is working closely with metro agencies like the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). Andheri East and Ghatkopar stations already offer integrated access to the metro network, streamlining multimodal travel.
