India's Green Leap: A 4000% Solar Boom Ignites Energy Future

At the 11th India Energy Storage Week (IESW) 2025 in New Delhi, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal announced that India has achieved a 4,000% surge in installed solar capacity, boosting the country’s renewable energy base to 227 GW.

He noted that India is likely the first G20 nation to have met its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement. Citing examples like Palli village in Jammu & Kashmir—the country’s first carbon-neutral panchayat—and the Yashobhoomi venue itself, he highlighted India’s strides in green infrastructure, including rooftop solar, wastewater recycling, and energy-efficient design.

The Minister also unveiled a ₹1 lakh crore innovation fund to accelerate advanced battery technologies, underscoring the importance of building resilient and self-reliant (Atmanirbhar) energy supply chains.

India’s solar manufacturing capabilities have expanded significantly over the past decade, with solar PV module capacity growing 38-fold and photovoltaic cell capacity 21-fold. He spotlighted key initiatives such as the PM Surya Ghar Yojana to bring rooftop solar to one crore households, PM Kusum Yojana for solar-powered irrigation, and the PLI scheme for Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) manufacturing.
