₹1,500 Crore Boost: Mulapeta Set to Become Mega Port

The Union government-owned Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) has announced plans to invest ₹1,500 crore to develop Mulapeta Port in Andhra Pradesh’s Srikakulam district into a mega port. The port is currently under construction by the state government.

VPA has formally requested the Andhra Pradesh government’s consent to take over the project and has written to the Centre seeking the transfer of approximately 2,000 acres of adjacent salt land. This land is intended for developing a special economic zone (SEZ) or a port-based industrial hub.

According to officials, VPA’s investment could help the Andhra Pradesh government save around ₹150 crore annually in interest payments on loans taken for the port’s development. Additionally, VPA plans to shift high-pollution cargo—such as iron ore and coal—from Visakhapatnam to Mulapeta in an effort to reduce pollution in urban areas.
