Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has become the largest steel supplier for the prestigious Zojila Tunnel project, which is set to be India’s longest road tunnel and Asia’s longest bi-directional tunnel upon its completion in 2027.
To date, SAIL has supplied over 31,000 tonnes of steel—including TMT bars, structural steel, and plates—for the construction. This consistent and large-scale contribution underscores SAIL’s strategic role in advancing key national infrastructure initiatives. “Mega-projects like the Zojila Tunnel place their trust in the strength and reliability of SAIL’s steel,” the company noted, reiterating its commitment to nation-building.
Located at an altitude of 11,578 feet, the 30-kilometre-long tunnel will provide all-weather connectivity between Srinagar and Leh via Dras and Kargil. This route is vital for both civilian travel and military logistics and forms a crucial part of the Srinagar–Kargil–Leh National Highway.
SAIL’s involvement in the Zojila Tunnel adds to its legacy of contributing to landmark infrastructure projects such as the Chenab Railway Bridge, Atal Tunnel, Bandra-Worli Sea Link, and the Dhola Sadiya and Bogibeel bridges—further reinforcing its reputation as a key partner in India’s infrastructure development.
