Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) is currently conducting a pre-feasibility study for a proposed greenfield refinery project in Jamnagar, Gujarat, with a planned capacity ranging between 200,000 and 240,000 barrels per day (BPD).
The estimated investment for the project is expected to fall between ₹1.25 lakh crore and ₹1.5 lakh crore, though official figures have not been confirmed, as the project remains in the early evaluation phase. “The company is conducting a pre-feasibility study for the project,” a source close to the development stated.
As the world’s third-largest importer and consumer of crude oil, India is strategically expanding its refining capacity to strengthen energy security and establish itself as a global refining hub. The proposed ONGC refinery aligns with this national vision and aims to meet growing domestic and export demand for petroleum products.
Jamnagar, already home to the world’s largest refining complex, offers significant logistical and infrastructure advantages, making it a strategic choice for ONGC’s potential expansion in the downstream sector.
