HZL Fortifies India's Future with Strategic Potash Win

Hindustan Zinc Ltd. (HZL) has received a Letter of Intent (LoI) from the Ministry of Mines for a potash block in Hanumangarh, Rajasthan, secured through Tranche V of the Central Government’s mineral block e-auction held in May 2025. Covering 1,800 hectares, the block is among the first potash blocks to be awarded in India, marking a significant milestone in the country’s drive toward mineral self-reliance.

This is HZL’s third acquisition in the critical minerals segment in 2025. The company had earlier received an LoI for a Rare Earth Elements (REE) block in Uttar Pradesh and previously secured a Tungsten and Associated Minerals block in Andhra Pradesh.

Potash is a key component in the production of NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) fertilisers. Currently, India imports its entire potash requirement from countries including Canada, Belarus, Jordan, and South Korea. The government’s first auction of potash and halite blocks is a strategic move to reduce import dependency and strengthen domestic supply chains for agricultural inputs.

HZL’s growing portfolio in critical minerals reflects its strategic commitment to supporting India’s resource security and industrial growth.
