AMRUT 2.0 Injects ₹800 Crore to Upgrade Delhi's Sewage System

The Central Government has approved ₹800 crore under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme to bolster Delhi’s sewage infrastructure, with a focus on unauthorised colonies.

The funding will support the Delhi government’s initiative to provide 2.5 lakh new sewer connections, enhancing sewage networks across over 410 unauthorised colonies and 100 urban villages in seven assembly constituencies, directly benefiting an estimated 35 lakh residents. It also aims to expand sewage treatment capacity and promote the recycling and reuse of 50 million litres of water per day.

The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) will bear the remaining project cost and will implement the Interceptor Sewer Project, designed to divert untreated wastewater to sewage treatment plants (STPs).

In parallel, the Union Finance Ministry’s Expenditure Finance Committee has cleared a ₹3,105 crore proposal for building 40 decentralised STPs and extending sewer networks in Outer Delhi.

The Centre has also urged the Delhi government to audit existing STPs, improve sludge management practices, and intensify efforts for the rejuvenation of the Yamuna River. As part of the 2025–26 budget, a total of ₹9,000 crore has been allocated for water and sewerage infrastructure, including ₹500 crore earmarked specifically for STP repairs.
