In a significant move to enhance road safety, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has approved a ₹150-crore upgrade for the Lucknow–Kanpur highway, targeting five high-risk accident zones identified through a detailed safety audit.
The project will address critical black spots at Nawabganj, Dahi Chowki, Tribhuvan Kheda, Asha Kheda, and Chamrauli—locations that have recorded over 50 serious accidents in the past three years. As part of the infrastructure upgrade, three new flyovers, each approximately 700 meters long, will be constructed at Nawabganj, Dahi Chowki, and Tribhuvan Kheda to streamline traffic flow and reduce collision risk.
To improve pedestrian safety, foot overbridges measuring around 25 meters in length will also be built at Asha Kheda and Chamrauli. Colonel Sharad Singh, NHAI Project Director, described the initiative as "a model of data-driven road planning," highlighting how accident data directly informed the design and intervention strategy.
Construction is expected to begin in November 2025, following the completion of the Lucknow–Kanpur Expressway. The project forms part of a broader integrated transport strategy aimed at easing congestion and reducing travel time between the two cities from three hours to approximately two.
