The Karnataka government has announced plans to construct a series of check dams across multiple streams in Vijayapura district to ensure consistent water availability and improve groundwater recharge in the region.
According to Minister M. B. Patil, the first phase of the initiative will focus on building 10 check dams, with construction on six structures set to begin soon. The broader project will cover around 156 streams, both large and small. The plan includes constructing a check dam at approximately every kilometre along the streams, along with desilting activities to improve water flow and storage capacity. As part of a pilot phase, work on six project packages will begin in the Babaleshwar Assembly constituency.
Patil noted that several irrigation initiatives launched during his tenure as irrigation minister in the government led by Siddaramaiah are now being expanded to strengthen water management and support broader regional development.
In addition, the state is planning a Rs 200 crore project to dredge and clean the Doni River, which is expected to enhance irrigation potential in surrounding agricultural areas. A proposal for the project will soon be submitted to the state government for approval.
