Kolkata’s ₹100 Crore Splash: Major Water Upgrades Underway

On 5 March 2026, Mayor Firhad Hakim inaugurated two new water supply facilities in Kolkata, located at Charu Avenue and near Vivekananda Park on Southern Avenue in South Kolkata.

The new installations include underground water reservoirs that will also function as capsule booster pumping stations, aimed at improving water distribution in nearby neighbourhoods. The facilities are expected to benefit thousands of residents, including those in parts of Jhaldar Math, who have largely depended on groundwater for their daily needs. The Charu Avenue station will serve several surrounding localities, while the pumping station near Vivekananda Park will cater to a wider residential area.

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation plans to establish more such facilities across South Kolkata, particularly in Jadavpur and Tollygunge, to reduce reliance on groundwater sources. In addition, a new water treatment plant is being developed near Dhalai Bridge, which will supply treated water to areas including Garia, Patuli, Baghajatin, Ramgarh, Jadavpur, and the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass corridor. The facility is expected to become operational within the next two years.

Over the past two years, KMC has completed more than 20 capsule booster pumping stations and plans to construct 15 additional units in the coming two years. The civic body is also upgrading the Dhapa Water Treatment Plant to ensure a stable water supply across key areas, with an estimated Rs 100 crore expected to be spent over the next six months to complete the enhancement works.
