Direct to Wayanad: Blasting Begins on ₹2,134 Cr Tunnel Project

The controlled rock blasting phase of the Anakkampoyil–Kalladi–Meppadi tunnel road project in Kerala will commence today, with the launch to be inaugurated by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

The ambitious infrastructure project aims to improve connectivity between Wayanad district and Kozhikode district, marking one of the state’s most significant road development initiatives. Due to safety considerations, public access to the blasting site will be restricted, while the inauguration will be broadcast live at the Muthappanpuzha ALP School. The launch event at Marippuzha will be presided over by Public Works Minister P. A. Mohamed Riyas, with participation from several other ministers and Member of Parliament Priyanka Gandhi.

The project has received environmental clearance from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, including approval for the diversion of 17.26 hectares of forest land. Once completed, the 8.73-km tunnel road is expected to significantly enhance travel efficiency between the two districts. The project is scheduled for completion within four years at an estimated cost of Rs 2,134.5 crore.

The initiative is being overseen by the Kerala Public Works Department, funded by the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board, and executed by the Konkan Railway Corporation Limited.
