The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has announced a ₹600 crore investment to modernise the aging Manjeera drinking water infrastructure. In addition, ₹3.52 crore has been allocated for urgent repair works.
During a recent inspection of the 65-year-old Manjeera Barrage, HMWSSB Managing Director Ashok Reddy confirmed the structural integrity of the barrage, noting that its gates and ropes remain operational. However, the apron has sustained damage, prompting immediate repair orders. Reddy also instructed teams to carry out essential maintenance—such as greasing, painting, vegetation clearance, and lighting enhancements—within a week. He further directed the installation of safety fencing along the spillway.
Repair proposals for the barrage were finalised in May 2023, and work is currently in progress. While gate tightening has been completed, the replacement of gates, ropes, and bearings is ongoing and expected to be finished within 45 days. To facilitate these upgrades, water from the Manjeera reservoir will be released below the minimum drawdown level (MDL), as advised by the State Dam Safety Authority.
