MCL Expands Odisha Footprint with New Mines and AI

Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL), a subsidiary of Coal India, is set to commence operations at two new coal mines—Subhadra and Balabhadra—located in the Talcher coalfield of Odisha. The Subhadra mine, with reserves of 25 million tonnes (MT), is expected to be operational by FY26, while the 10 MT Balabhadra mine is scheduled to begin by FY30.

These developments will further strengthen MCL’s footprint in Odisha’s Angul district, where the company already operates seven out of its 18 active mines across the state. To enhance transparency and operational efficiency, MCL has implemented CCTV surveillance in 98% of its operational zones and is using artificial intelligence (AI) and GPS technology to monitor coal transportation in real time.

MCL has also reiterated its commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by FY30. In FY25, the company produced 225 MT of coal, a 9% increase over the previous year, while dispatches rose by 6% to 210 MT. With combined reserves of 35 MT across the new mines, MCL has assured a stable coal supply for power generation in the foreseeable future.
