More than six years after its launch, the ₹821.97-crore Jalasiri drinking water project in Mangaluru has recorded significant progress. The initiative was introduced by the Karnataka government to strengthen the city’s drinking water supply infrastructure.
According to the Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation (KUIDFC), which is implementing the project for the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC), physical progress has reached 63 percent, while financial progress stands at 59.61 percent.
The project includes the laying of a 52.57-km clear water transmission line, of which 44.64 km has been completed, and the installation of 1,155.36 km of water distribution pipelines, with 868.84 km laid so far. It aims to provide water connections to 96,300 households, with 37,025 connections already completed.
In terms of storage infrastructure, three out of 19 overhead tanks (OHTs) have been commissioned, civil works for 14 OHTs have been completed, and work on one OHT is currently in progress. Construction of ground-level service reservoirs (GLSRs) and pump houses is also advancing.
The total project cost includes ₹617.22 crore for infrastructure development and ₹204.75 crore for eight years of maintenance. The contract for the project was awarded in 2019 to the joint venture of SUEZ Projects and DRS Infratech.
