Telangana's Health Gets a ₹4,000 Crore Boost from World Bank

The World Bank has agreed to extend a $477 million (approximately ₹4,000 crore) loan to the Government of Telangana to support the ‘Telangana Strategic Vision for Attaining Sustainable Transformation in Healthcare’ project. The initiative aims to significantly enhance the state’s healthcare infrastructure and service delivery systems.

The loan, requested by the state in 2024, is currently scheduled for appraisal in November 2025, with final approval expected by February 2026. The Department of Health, Medical and Family Welfare (DoHMFW) will lead the implementation of the programme.

The total project cost is estimated at $1,380.19 million, with the World Bank funding $477 million, and the Telangana government contributing $904.19 million. The project is part of a broader six-year health initiative valued at $4.9 billion, encompassing four key state entities.

Major components of the programme include:

Establishment of trauma and dialysis centres, Development of vascular access facilities and organ retrieval units, Procurement of super-specialty hospital equipment, Expansion of drug de-addiction centres, Upgrades to maternal and child health services

Officials have described the initiative as a comprehensive and strategic step toward strengthening Telangana’s public healthcare ecosystem, aimed at addressing both immediate needs and long-term health challenges.
