₹182 Crore Boost: Perambur-Ambattur Lines to Transform Chennai Rail

The Railway Board has approved the construction of the 5th and 6th railway lines between Perambur and Ambattur in the Chennai Division of Southern Railway. The project, estimated at ₹182 crore, is aimed at addressing the severe congestion currently faced at Chennai Central.

The new 6.4 km stretch is a critical step in supporting the development of a new coaching terminal at Perambur. According to Southern Railway, once completed, the terminal will enable the relocation of nearly 75% of existing train rakes from Chennai Central, thereby greatly easing traffic and operational pressure on the station.

The 5th and 6th lines are specifically designed to ensure seamless and efficient train movements to and from the upcoming Perambur coaching facility.
