The Punjab government has approved a major project to repair and upgrade more than 18,000 km of roads by March 2026.
This initiative comes in addition to the ongoing work on 12,000 km of roads being executed by the Public Works Department (PWD) and the Punjab Mandi Board. Senior officials confirmed that tenders for the new works have already been floated, with fast-tracked planning underway to ensure immediate commencement. The state recently received ₹3,000 crore from the Central government under the ‘Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment’ scheme, a significant portion of which will fund this road-infrastructure programme.
The accelerated efforts also coincide with the upcoming Zila Parishad and Block Samiti elections, prompting the government to expedite tendering before the model code of conduct comes into effect.
