NTPC's Carbon Storage First: India Drills Key CCUS Borewell

NTPC Limited has commenced drilling for India’s first carbon dioxide (CO₂) injection borewell at its Pakri Barwadih coal mine in Jharkhand, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) journey.

The project, led by NTPC Energy Technology Research Alliance (NETRA), supports India’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2070. The 1,200-metre-deep borewell will evaluate the potential of underground rock formations for safe, long-term CO₂ storage. It will include extensive core, methane, and water simulation studies to ensure effective sequestration and environmental safety.

This initiative forms a key part of NTPC’s broader CCUS strategy to develop scalable carbon capture solutions for India’s power and industrial sectors. As the country’s largest integrated power utility, NTPC continues to drive the energy transition, with 30.9 GW under construction and a target of 60 GW of renewable capacity by 2032.
