North Guwahati: Water On Tap, Soon!

The North Guwahati water supply project, supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), is 90% complete and is expected to be fully operational by August, according to officials from the Guwahati Jal Board (GJB).

Once commissioned, the project will deliver 37 million litres of potable water daily, benefiting around 15,000 households across five designated District Metering Areas (DMAs). Significant progress was made after 2022, including the challenging task of laying pipelines along steep 21-foot slopes.

GJB officials noted the potential risks of landslides damaging the pipelines or compromising the reservoir's safety. “We consulted with IIT-Guwahati, whose recommendations led to the construction of gabion retaining walls to stabilize the slopes and safeguard the reservoir,” said Nipendra Mohan Das, Chief Engineer of the Guwahati Jal Board. He added that most of the slope stabilization work is complete, with only minor segments remaining.

Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah recently visited the site and confirmed that the work is progressing in line with IIT-Guwahati’s technical guidance. Water distribution will begin once all safety measures are in place, although some areas are already receiving supply from the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department.
