Mumbai's Mega Makeover: Deonar Dumpsite to Dreamland

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has awarded a ₹2,540 crore contract to Hyderabad-based Navayuga Engineering Company (NEC) for the bioremediation of 18.5 million tonnes of legacy waste at Mumbai’s Deonar dumping ground—one of Asia’s oldest and largest landfills.

The project aims to reclaim approximately 110 hectares of land, which will later be used for residential development as part of the Dharavi Redevelopment Project—a joint initiative between the Adani Group and the Maharashtra government’s Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA). BMC had issued a ₹2,368 crore tender for the bioremediation work in May.

NEC secured the contract as the lowest bidder, quoting ₹1,373.35 per tonne. The scope of work includes the excavation, segregation, and scientific treatment of the waste, with the goal of transforming the site into usable land within three years, accounting for mobilisation and monsoon-related delays.

Established in 1986, NEC has a strong track record in executing large-scale infrastructure projects and has previously collaborated with the Adani Group.
