Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has secured a prestigious consultancy contract to prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Mumbai’s proposed Water Metro system, modeled after Kochi’s pioneering water-based public transport network.
The ₹4.4 crore assignment was awarded by the Maharashtra government through a competitive bidding process.
With this win, KMRL joins the ranks of national-level infrastructure consultants—similar to the role once exclusively held by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) in the metro rail space.
The upcoming DPR will build on an earlier feasibility study conducted by KMRL’s consultancy wing, which examined the potential for water-based connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The proposed network envisions linking key coastal and riverine areas such as Vaitarna, Vasai, Manori, Thane, Panvel, and Karanja, aiming to provide a sustainable and efficient alternative for urban commuters in India’s financial capital.
