KICC: Chennai’s $525 Cr Convention Dream Set for 2026

The Kalaignar International Convention Centre (KICC) in Muttukadu, Tamil Nadu, is on track for completion by February 2026.

Public Works Minister E.V. Velu recently reviewed the progress of this landmark infrastructure project, which aims to position Chennai as a premier destination for large-scale conferences and events. Implemented by the Public Works Department (PWD), the ₹525-crore project was launched in May 2025 and spans 37.99 acres, featuring a total built-up area of 2.08 lakh sq. ft.

The convention centre will include a 91,924 sq. ft. exhibition hall capable of accommodating 10,000 people, a 5,000-seat convention hall, and a 1,500-seat auditorium. It will also offer dining facilities and parking for over 3,300 vehicles.

Once completed, the KICC is expected to significantly enhance Tamil Nadu’s global profile as a hub for international conventions and cultural events. Senior officials, including Mangat Ram Sharma, Additional Chief Secretary, PWD, were present during the review.
