Visakhapatnam is set to develop a metro rail network featuring four corridors spanning 76.70 km to address the city’s long-term transportation needs, according to N. Ramakrishna Reddy. Speaking at the annual meeting of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in Vijayawada on March 8, 2026, he stated that the proposed Visakhapatnam Metro Rail project will be integrated with the city’s existing road infrastructure to improve urban mobility.
A major highlight of the plan is a metro-cum-four-lane road flyover along National Highway 16, which will combine metro rail infrastructure with road transport to ease congestion and streamline traffic movement.
In addition, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has proposed constructing 12 flyovers at key junctions along NH-16 in Visakhapatnam to facilitate smoother movement of freight and passenger vehicles.
Ramakrishna Reddy also noted that the proposed Vijayawada Metro Rail project will include three corridors covering 66.20 km. The corridors are planned largely along national highway flyovers to strengthen connectivity across Vijayawada.
Meanwhile, Devendra Kumar emphasized the need to accelerate transport infrastructure development in Andhra Pradesh to reduce travel time and enhance regional connectivity. He added that modern trains such as Vande Bharat Express and Amrit Bharat Express are offering passengers faster, more comfortable, and technologically advanced travel options across India’s railway network.
