The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) has received approval from the state government to construct an overhead cable car system linking two of the city's most iconic heritage sites — Golconda Fort and the Qutb Shahi Tombs.
First cleared in 2021, the long-awaited tourism infrastructure project aims to enhance visitor access and boost footfall in the historic precinct. The 1.5-kilometre ropeway will be developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model to reduce HMDA’s financial outlay.
Real estate consultancy firm Knight Frank has been appointed to carry out a feasibility study and prepare a detailed project report (DPR), expected within three to four months.
Estimated to cost around ₹100 crore, the cable car system will include two terminals — one near the entrance of Golconda Fort and the other at the Qutb Shahi Tombs. Once completed, the ropeway will reduce travel time between the sites from 15–20 minutes by road to just 5–10 minutes. The project is slated for completion within two years.
