Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has assured that land acquisition for the proposed extension of Kannur International Airport's runway will be expedited. The project involves extending the runway to 4,000 metres, requiring the acquisition of 245.32 acres across Keezhalur and Kanad villages.
Valuation of agricultural trees and buildings on the land is nearing completion. While the initial 11(1) notification was issued in October 2018, the final 19(1) notification will follow once the compensation amount is deposited in the District Collector’s account.
CPI(M) leaders recently submitted a petition urging the government to speed up the acquisition process. The Chief Minister confirmed that necessary funds are being arranged and that the government is actively considering a request to extend the 2008 rehabilitation package to the current phase, despite amendments to land acquisition laws in 2013. The request was put forward by the Landowners Action Committee and MLA K.K. Shailaja.
A detailed valuation statement is currently being prepared as part of the next steps in the acquisition process.
