From Sunlight to Grid: India's 340 GW Green Energy Highway on Track

India continues to make strong progress in expanding its renewable energy infrastructure, with 48 GW of inter-state transmission system (ISTS) capacity already operational to evacuate solar and wind power. Minister of State for Power Shripad Naik informed the Rajya Sabha that 159 GW of ISTS capacity is currently under construction.

The government has outlined plans for a total of 340 GW of ISTS to support the evacuation of 230 GW of renewable energy into the national grid. Of this, 48 GW is completed, 159 GW under construction, 21 GW under bidding, and 112 GW under planning, Naik stated.

In addition, intra-state transmission systems (InSTS) are being reinforced through the Green Energy Corridor (GEC) schemes.

The GEC-I scheme—implemented in Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, and Maharashtra—entails an investment of ₹10,141.68 crore. GEC-II, covering Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh, is being executed at a cost of ₹12,031.33 crore.

In June 2025, India’s peak power demand reached 2,43,118 MW, with 2,42,493 MW met—leaving a shortfall of just 625 MW.
