Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated the capital’s first pilot project to convert overhead power lines into an underground distribution network on 12 July 2025, marking a major step toward modernizing the city’s power infrastructure.
The initiative is being implemented in BH Block Colony, Janta Flats, Shalimar Bagh, under the jurisdiction of Tata Power Delhi Distribution (Tata Power-DDL). Inspired by global best practices, the project aims to enhance safety, reliability, and aesthetics, while serving as a scalable model for wider adoption across Delhi.
As part of the project, 5 km of overhead high-tension (HT) and low-tension (LT) lines will be replaced with a 10-km underground LT (440V) network and a 1.2-km HT (11kV) underground cable system. Additionally, GI octagonal poles will be installed to upgrade street lighting.
The underground network is designed to deliver 24×7 uninterrupted power, reduce outages during inclement weather, improve safety in high-density areas, and visually declutter the urban landscape.
