Torrent Power Sparks Up Competition in Maharashtra!

Torrent Power has secured initial approval from the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) to operate as a parallel electricity distributor in Pune, Nagpur, and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). In a public notice dated June 23, MERC expressed satisfaction with the company's proposal, marking a key regulatory step forward as Torrent Power moves to enter markets currently served by existing distribution companies (DISCOMs).

This milestone follows a petition filed by Torrent Power in December 2022, signaling the end of a long-awaited regulatory process. The company now plans to invest approximately ₹15,000 crore over the next five years to build critical distribution infrastructure, including transformers, substations, and power lines.

Torrent Power's proposed tariffs are slightly lower than the prevailing rates in these regions, potentially offering consumers a more affordable electricity option. Final approval for full-scale operations is expected after MERC reviews the company’s detailed submission on July 22.

If approved, the move would mark a significant expansion opportunity for Torrent Power, enabling it to compete in key urban markets and diversify its distribution footprint.
