Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated a Green Hydrogen Plant developed by the Torrent Group in Gorakhpur, marking a key step in the state’s transition toward cleaner energy solutions.
The project, jointly developed by Torrent Power and Torrent Gas, has been set up by Torrent Power and has an annual production capacity of 72 tonnes per annum (TPA) of green hydrogen. The hydrogen produced will be blended with natural gas at up to 2% concentration and supplied through Torrent Gas’ City Gas Distribution (CGD) network in Gorakhpur. The blended fuel will serve domestic households, CNG stations, and industrial consumers using existing pipeline infrastructure.
According to the company, the Gorakhpur facility is the first Green Hydrogen Plant in Uttar Pradesh and the largest green hydrogen–natural gas blending project within India’s City Gas Distribution sector.
Torrent Gas, authorised by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB), operates CGD networks across Gorakhpur, Sant Kabir Nagar, and Kushinagar. The company currently runs 32 CNG stations in the region, supplying gas to over 12,000 households and 73 industrial and commercial consumers, with plans for further expansion.
Green hydrogen, produced via electrolysis using renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydro, emits no direct carbon emissions. Its blending with natural gas is expected to reduce overall emissions while enabling the use of existing gas infrastructure and supporting the early development of a hydrogen-based economy.
The inauguration highlights ongoing efforts to accelerate clean energy adoption and advance low-carbon technologies in India’s energy landscape.
