Delhi Powers Up: City Gets First Smart Substation & New Solar Drive

In a major boost to Delhi's power infrastructure and renewable energy goals, Union Minister Harsh Malhotra and Delhi Power Minister Ashish Sood inaugurated the capital’s first 2x1,000 kVA smart pad-mounted substation alongside the ‘Solarise East’ initiative at Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Surajmal Vihar.

Developed by BSES Yamuna Power (BYPL) at Amar Mohalla in Gandhi Nagar with an investment of ₹1.60 crore, the compact substation adds ~380 kVA of capacity to serve nearly 1,400 consumers. Designed to occupy 80% less space than traditional setups, the unit integrates transformers, ring main units, and low-voltage panels into a single, highly safe, weather-sealed enclosure.

Meanwhile, the complementary ‘Solarise East’ drive aims to accelerate rooftop solar adoption across East Delhi, leveraging both the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana and the Delhi Solar Policy to lower power costs and speed up the city's clean energy transition.
