The Assam Cabinet has greenlit the establishment of Swahid Kanaklata Barua University at the Bholaguri Tea Estate in Gohpur, with a proposed investment of Rs 400 crore. Announcing the decision, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described it as a “historic moment for Assam,” highlighting the university’s potential to transform education across the Northeast.
To facilitate development, the government will acquire land from the tea estate, which will involve the relocation of some residents. The Chief Minister assured a comprehensive rehabilitation package, including third and fourth-grade government job opportunities and support through the Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS).
The university will be Assam’s first academic institution focused on Industry 4.0 and 5.0 technologies, offering specialized programs in artificial intelligence, quantum computing, robotics, and other cutting-edge fields. Renowned experts from IIT Guwahati and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) will be involved in designing the curriculum.
Named after the legendary freedom fighter Swahid Kanaklata Barua, the university seeks to honour her legacy of courage and determination while positioning Assam as a leader in next-generation education and innovation.
