The Maharashtra government has approved the ₹526 crore Indrayani River Revitalisation Project, to be implemented by the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC).
Scheduled for completion within two years, the project aims to restore the ecological health of the Indrayani River, which has been severely affected by industrial discharge, sewage inflows, and water hyacinth infestation. The revitalisation plan focuses on water treatment, flood management, and riverfront beautification.
Key components include the construction of a dedicated drainage system for rainwater harvesting, installation of interceptors to divert polluted inflows, embankment development for flood control, and creation of green spaces along the riverbanks. Given that the river passes through major pilgrimage centres such as Alandi and Dehu, the project holds cultural as well as environmental significance for local communities.
Additionally, two new sewage treatment plants (STPs) with capacities of 40 MLD and 20 MLD will be established in Chikhali to further enhance water quality. The initiative, approved by a state-level committee in September 2025, marks a major step toward restoring the Indrayani River’s ecological balance and ensuring sustainable urban development in the region.
