Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), a leading defence Public Sector Undertaking (PSU), is planning to establish a greenfield shipbuilding facility outside Kolkata to cater to the rising demand in both defence and commercial shipbuilding, including export markets.
In 2024, GRSE expanded its shipbuilding capacity from 20 to 24 vessels simultaneously, with plans to scale up to 28 ships by 2025 through the revival of idle infrastructure and the leasing of additional dry docks. As of March 31, 2025, the company’s order book stood at ₹22,680 crore. The Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) has set an ambitious target of securing ₹25,000 crore in new orders this fiscal year, aiming to grow the total order book to ₹40,000 crore.
Meanwhile, the Government of West Bengal is actively seeking to attract investments in the defence sector and is considering the development of a dedicated defence industrial park, leveraging the state’s robust network of small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
