On November 3, 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for transformative Pune Metro developments totaling approximately ₹21,800 crore.
Central to the inauguration was the opening of the Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar Metro corridor—a PPP project designed to bridge Pune's technological hub with its traditional city centers. The route aims to alleviate urban congestion and shorten daily travel times. During his address, Prime Minister Modi underlined Pune's status as a powerhouse for innovation, startups, auto manufacturing, and pharmaceuticals.
Reflecting on broader transport milestones, the Prime Minister shared that India's operational Metro footprint now stands at nearly 1,200 km in 26 cities. Statewide, Maharashtra has expanded its functional rail network from roughly 11 km in 2014 to nearly 175 km, with projects worth over ₹2.5 lakh crore continuing to build out another 680 km of urban rail across the state.
