The Kerala Coastal Zone Management Authority (KCZMA) has granted Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearance for the proposed Chennur-Kothad bridge, marking a significant step forward in a long-pending infrastructure project. This approval brings hope to nearly 5,000 residents of Chennur, a remote island in the Kadamakudy panchayat of Ernakulam district, who have long demanded direct connectivity to the mainland.
“A major hurdle has been cleared with the CRZ nod,” said Sheeja Jose, Ward member of Chennur. She called on authorities to expedite land acquisition and begin construction without further delay.
Currently, island residents must travel 16 kilometers via the Varapuzha bridge to reach Kochi city through Container Road. The new bridge is expected to reduce this distance to just four kilometers, significantly enhancing mobility, access to essential services, and overall safety for the community.
