Flying High on the ECR: Chennai's ₹2,100 Crore Elevated Corridor

The Tamil Nadu State Highways Authority (TNSHA) is set to develop a 14.2 km four-lane elevated corridor from Thiruvanmiyur to Uthandi along the East Coast Road (ECR)—the longest flyover project ever planned by the state.

Estimated at ₹2,100 crore, the final project cost may vary based on land acquisition and associated factors. The corridor will be developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, backed by bank financing, and will include a tolling mechanism for cost recovery.

The elevated corridor, starting near Tidel Park and extending to Uthandi, will be constructed along the existing median, with a width ranging from 16 to 20 metres and provision for footpaths. Once operational, it is expected to reduce travel time from the current 60 minutes to just 15–20 minutes, significantly easing the commute for motorists heading toward Mamallapuram, Puducherry, Cuddalore, and other coastal destinations.

Officials noted that beyond decongesting the ECR, the flyover will also provide an effective alternate route from Adyar to Kelambakkam, Thiruporur, and Mambakkam via OMR, helping to ease traffic pressure on both ECR and OMR corridors.
