Nearly eight years after land acquisition began, the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) has officially launched development of its seventh independent township — Aerotropolis, spread over 5,500 acres as an extension of Aerocity.
The project will be developed in phases, starting with Blocks B, C, and D. Block A remains on hold due to ongoing litigation linked to the ₹140 crore Guava Orchard Scam uncovered in May 2023. GMADA has floated tenders worth ₹457 crore for internal roads, sewerage, stormwater drainage, and underground electrical systems. A senior GMADA official stated that work will begin once contracts are awarded and is expected to be completed within 18 months. The initial development phase will cover 927 acres, down from the originally planned 1,653 acres.
Approved by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann in June 2022, with additional directives issued in June 2024, the township is strategically located near Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport. Aerotropolis will include 8,600 residential plots ranging from 100 to 2,000 square yards, along with commercial zones. It will be developed under GMADA’s land pooling policy, ensuring local landowners receive developed plots in return for their land contribution.
