Kochi Corporation's ₹90-crore Biogas Plant Nears Completion

Kochi Corporation is accelerating efforts to implement a sustainable, multi-pronged waste management solution, anchored by the upcoming ₹90-crore compressed biogas (CBG) plant at Brahmapuram, which is nearing commissioning. Trial runs for food waste processing have already commenced.

Developed by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), the plant will eventually process 150 tonnes of biodegradable waste per day, generating approximately 15 tonnes of biogas. Operations will begin with a 75-tonne daily capacity before scaling up.

As part of the broader Brahmapuram master plan, a ₹60.96-crore windrow composting plant—with the ability to process 50 tonnes of organic waste per day—has also been proposed and is expected to be completed within a year.

In parallel:

The existing Black Soldier Fly (BSF) plant at Brahmapuram will continue operations. A new waste-to-energy (WTE) plant is in the pipeline to further diversify processing methods.

Together, these facilities are expected to provide a combined daily waste processing capacity of over 250 tonnes, enabling operational continuity even if one system is temporarily offline.

To reinforce the city's waste infrastructure, the Corporation is also promoting decentralised waste treatment units at locations such as Ponnurunni, Ravipuram, and others—ensuring a resilient, distributed approach to waste management.
