Karnataka Seeks ₹11,122 Crore Central Boost for Water Projects

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who also holds the Irrigation portfolio, has announced that the state has sought ₹11,122.76 crore in central funding for six major irrigation and water infrastructure projects. The request was formally presented during a meeting with Union Water Resources Minister C.R. Patil in New Delhi.

Key funding requests include:

₹804.66 crore for the Sonnathi Lift Irrigation Project, ₹2,660.70 crore for the Indi Branch Canal under the Upper Krishna Project, ₹3,000 crore for the third stage of the Malaprabha Canal, ₹1,610 crore for the Benne Halla flood mitigation project

Shivakumar also urged the Centre to provide 25% assistance for the Yettinahole project, which aims to supply drinking water to drought-prone districts. He noted that the project is facing delays due to pending forest clearances, but added that the Union Environment Minister has assured support in expediting approvals.

Additionally, the Upper Bhadra Project, a major lift irrigation initiative covering over 2.25 lakh hectares across four districts, is awaiting central approval following submission of revised cost estimates. “We understand that one of the projects has been cleared, but we are awaiting official confirmation,” Shivakumar stated.

The funding, if approved, is expected to significantly boost Karnataka’s efforts in enhancing water security, agricultural productivity, and drought resilience.
