DJB Launches ₹917 Crore Project to Tackle Yamuna Pollution

At its 173rd meeting, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) approved sewage treatment plant (STP) augmentation and upgradation projects worth ₹917.33 crore to strengthen efforts toward cleaning the Yamuna River.

The projects will add 51.5 million gallons per day (MGD) of sewage treatment capacity through a combination of new infrastructure, upgrades, and long-term operations and maintenance (O&M). Key initiatives include:

Yamuna Vihar STP (Phase-III & IV): Capacity enhancement from 25 MGD to 40 MGD and construction of a new 15 MGD Phase-IV unit, under a ₹403 crore package with 12 years of O&M.

Keshopur STP (Phase-I): Upgradation from 12 MGD to 18 MGD, with ₹133.33 crore allocated and 11 years of O&M.

South and South-West Delhi STPs: ₹381 crore investment to upgrade five STPs—Vasant Kunj Phases I & II, Ghitorni, Mehrauli, and Okhla Phase-V—adding 15.5 MGD capacity with 12 years of O&M.

DJB officials stated that these initiatives will modernise Delhi’s wastewater infrastructure, help meet pollution control norms set by the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) and National Green Tribunal (NGT), and significantly reduce the discharge of untreated sewage into the Yamuna.
