The long-delayed expansion of Jolly Grant Airport near Dehradun has gained significant momentum, as the district administration successfully acquired over 85% of the required land within just three days. This achievement marks a crucial step in transforming the airport into an international aviation hub and improving air connectivity throughout Uttarakhand.
To further accelerate the project, a high-level review meeting was held at the District Collectorate Auditorium. Chaired by the District Magistrate, the session focused on expediting land acquisition, compensation disbursement, and the resettlement of displaced families. Emphasizing the strategic value of the airport, the DM called for urgent action to ensure the facility is ready for international operations, reinforcing its role in boosting tourism and state-wide connectivity.
Jolly Grant Airport is vital for connecting key religious and tourist destinations including Haridwar, Rishikesh, and the Char Dhams, as well as Dehradun. During the meeting, it was revealed that 43 families and 93 farmers living on unregistered plots were affected by the acquisition. These plots were classified as unclaimed, prompting the District Magistrate to direct the SDM, Doiwala, to review land registry records from the past three years to determine rightful ownership.
In response to local demands for fair compensation, the DM instructed the SDM and Sub Registrar to evaluate claims at market value and submit a comprehensive report. He also addressed requests for additional compensation, asking for their assessment under current guidelines and submission for approval. Family verifications have been completed, and compensation distribution is underway.
To minimize disruption and maintain project momentum, the DM urged officials to fast-track displacement and rehabilitation efforts. The airport’s expansion will enable it to accommodate international flights and larger aircraft, significantly strengthening Uttarakhand’s domestic and global air links.
