In a landmark development, the governments of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have reached several critical agreements aimed at resolving long-standing inter-state water disputes.
The talks, held in New Delhi and facilitated by the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti, were attended by Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. A major outcome of the meeting was Andhra Pradesh's agreement to Telangana’s proposal to install telemetry systems at all major reservoirs and water projects. Officials noted that this move will enhance transparency and enable accurate monitoring of water usage across both states.
The two states also agreed on the allocation of river management board headquarters:
The Godavari River Management Board will be based in Hyderabad, The Krishna River Management Board will be located in Andhra Pradesh
This arrangement is expected to improve inter-state coordination and administrative efficiency in managing river water resources.
Additionally, Andhra Pradesh approved Telangana’s request to begin urgent repair work on the Srisailam project, a critical water infrastructure asset for both states. To address remaining issues related to the Krishna and Godavari river basins, the states have decided to establish a joint committee comprising senior officials and technical experts within a week.
The meeting was widely described as “cordial and constructive,” signaling a renewed spirit of cooperation between the two states on water sharing and river management.
