Wastewater to Wealth: Punjab's ₹145 Cr STP Boosts Green Future

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, along with Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convener Arvind Kejriwal, inaugurated a 15 million gallons per day (MGD) sewage treatment plant (STP) at Sector-83, Mohali—marking a significant milestone in the state’s urban waste management and green infrastructure efforts.

Constructed at an estimated cost of ₹145.26 crore, the state-of-the-art facility will significantly enhance Punjab’s sewage treatment capacity, reduce pollution, and support environmentally sustainable urban growth. The plant is designed to recycle treated wastewater for non-potable uses, promoting circular water use in line with Punjab’s environmental and sustainability goals.

Officials highlighted that the new STP will help curb environmental degradation, improve public hygiene, and ensure cleaner and healthier living conditions for residents of Mohali and adjoining areas. It is expected to serve as a model for similar projects across the state.

Beginning December, the Punjab government will expand efforts to strengthen urban infrastructure by ensuring water supply, sewerage systems, cleanliness, roads, street lighting, and STPs in 166 cities across the state.
