Waste Not, Heat Not: The Success of Tata Steel’s TES Project.

Tata Steel, in partnership with Kraftblock GmbH, is nearing the completion of one year of successful operations of a Thermal Energy Storage (TES) system at Sinter Plant No. 3 (SP3) at its Jamshedpur Works.

The TES system captures high-temperature waste heat generated during the sintering process—where iron ore fines are thermally agglomerated into sinter for use in blast furnaces—that would otherwise be emitted into the atmosphere. The recovered heat is stored and later utilized to preheat process water required in the sintering stage, enhancing overall energy efficiency while lowering emissions.

The deployment of this technology reflects Tata Steel’s continued focus on sustainable manufacturing practices and the integration of clean energy solutions across its steel production operations.
