Thoothukudi to Get ₹6,000 Crore Power Boost

The Tamil Nadu Power Generation Corporation Ltd (TNPGCL) has prepared feasibility reports for a proposed 600 MW coal-based thermal power plant in Thoothukudi, with an estimated investment of ₹6,000 crore. After evaluating four potential locations, land adjacent to the existing thermal plant was identified as the most suitable site.

The project was first announced by former Electricity Minister V. Senthil Balaji during the 2025–26 state budget session. According to TNPGCL officials, the new unit will enhance local power generation, reduce transmission losses, and ensure a more reliable power supply for households, agriculture, and industries in southern Tamil Nadu, which currently depends heavily on power from the northern and western regions of the state.

With Tamil Nadu’s peak power demand reaching 20,840 MW last year—and expected to grow by 6–7% annually—TNPGCL is planning a pipeline of new thermal projects totaling 6,486 MW over the next five years. These include the nearly completed North Chennai Stage III (800 MW), Udangudi Stage I (2x660 MW), Ennore SEZ (2x660 MW), and the proposed Thoothukudi plant. Feasibility reports will be submitted for government approval before the commencement of construction.
