Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh has announced that the final phase of the long-delayed Shahpur-Kandi Power Project—revived as a national project after four decades—will be completed by September 15.
Speaking at a DISHA meeting, Dr Singh stated, “Water will start flowing through the project for electricity generation,” marking a major milestone in harnessing the full potential of the River Ravi. The project is strategically designed to divert surplus Ravi waters—currently flowing into Pakistan via the Madhopur Headworks—for beneficial use in Jammu & Kashmir and Punjab.
He also highlighted the revival of the Ujh Multipurpose Project, originally envisioned in the 1920s by Maharaja Hari Singh, with coordination between the Union Territory of J&K, the Central Government, and the Punjab administration.
The Ujh project is expected to play a key role in irrigation, covering up to 90,000 hectares, while also serving strategic interests by blocking infiltration routes along the river. An alternate plan is also under joint development to prevent surplus water from flowing into Pakistan, aligning with national water security priorities.
