The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has granted in-principle approval for the establishment of a ₹500 crore National Military Drone Technology Hub at IIT Kanpur, a major initiative aimed at enhancing India’s indigenous capabilities in advanced unmanned and counter-drone technologies.
The proposed hub will offer end-to-end capabilities spanning the design, development, testing, validation, and certification of military drone systems, including payloads, data links, ground control stations, and counter-unmanned aerial systems (C-UAS).
The proposal was prepared by the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA), the nodal agency for the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor (UP DIC), and submitted by the state government to the Ministry of Defence on May 29, 2026. The proposal seeks formal recognition of IIT Kanpur’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) as the National Military Drone Technology Hub.
The initiative follows a review conducted by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on April 10, 2026, during which he emphasized strengthening IIT Kanpur’s role in defence technology innovation and indigenous capability development. IIT Kanpur had previously been designated as a Centre of Excellence for drone technologies with a total project outlay of ₹20.3 crore, including ₹15.3 crore funded by the Uttar Pradesh government.
According to officials, the new hub is expected to significantly strengthen the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor, positioning it as a leading centre for unmanned systems development while supporting India's broader defence modernization and self-reliance objectives.
The Centre of Excellence at IIT Kanpur is already operational as an integrated platform for research and development, testing, training, startup incubation, and industry collaboration in the drone technology ecosystem. The proposed expansion is expected to accelerate innovation, foster defence-focused startups, and provide advanced technological solutions to India's armed forces.
