OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is planning a significant expansion in India with the development of one of the country’s largest artificial intelligence data centres. The facility is expected to have a capacity of at least 1 gigawatt (GW).
This move positions OpenAI alongside major tech players such as Microsoft, Google, and Reliance, all of which have made substantial investments in India’s digital infrastructure. According to Bloomberg, OpenAI is currently in early-stage discussions with potential Indian partners. While the exact location and timeline are yet to be finalised, more details may emerge during CEO Sam Altman's upcoming visit to India later this month.
Recognising India as a key growth market, OpenAI has recently opened an office in New Delhi and is expanding its local team. The planned data centre supports India’s $1.2 billion IndiaAI Mission, which focuses on fostering domestic AI capabilities. By hosting data locally, the facility will enhance the performance of AI services, enable more customised solutions, and improve regulatory trust through better data sovereignty.
