Tap to Table: Sambalpur’s ₹451 Crore Water Makeover Begins

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on January 10, 2026 laid the foundation stone for a major drinking water supply project in Sambalpur, aimed at providing round-the-clock access to safe drinking water for residents.

With an estimated cost of ₹451.24 crore, the project is designed to address the city’s long-standing water shortages and improve overall urban living conditions. The plan includes laying around 340 km of pipelines across Sambalpur, constructing one intake well, and setting up two modern water treatment plants with capacities of 65 million litres per day (MLD) for Sambalpur and 35 MLD for Burla.

Once operational, the system will supply nearly 100 million litres of treated water daily to households, benefiting about five lakh people across 41 wards.

The project is being implemented under the Centre’s AMRUT 2.0 mission and the ‘Drink From Tap’ programme, which will enable residents to consume potable water directly from taps. Highlighting its significance, the Chief Minister said, “Access to safe drinking water is essential for healthy living.”
