The Delhi government has unveiled a plan to strengthen the capital’s drinking water infrastructure, including the laying of nearly 7,000 km of new pipelines over the next two to three years.
Addressing the Delhi Legislative Assembly, Water Minister Parvesh Verma said the initiative is aimed at ensuring safe and adequate drinking water for every household. He noted that projects worth ₹7,212 crore have been launched over the past 11 months, covering water supply, treatment and distribution, as part of a broader effort to address long-standing gaps in the sector. The minister added that the government is working closely with the Centre on these initiatives.
To augment water availability, Delhi is in discussions with Uttar Pradesh and Haryana to source additional raw water in exchange for treated wastewater for irrigation. The arrangement could add more than 100 million gallons per day (MGD) to the city’s water supply.
Highlighting efforts to curb losses, Verma said, “We have initiated a plan to reduce leakage to around 5 per cent within the next two years.”
